The 90-Minute Emergency Lighting Test - What Is It?

Emergency lights are important in the event of an emergency, as they can help individuals safely evacuate the building. Building safety codes require that your emergency lights function for at least
1.5 hours. The 90-minute emergency lighting test makes sure that your emergency lights are ready to handle any situation.

The 90-minute emergency lighting test, also called the 90-minute battery load test, is an annual test that is required by most states for commercial properties to ensure proper safety standards are met.
It is required to be done by a qualified party. During a 90-minute emergency lighting test, the power
to the building will be shut off for 90 minutes to simulate losing power. During this time, the tester will keep a close watch on emergency lighting and exit signs to make sure they stay illuminated at the appropriate level for the entire duration of the test.

Why You Need an Annual 90-Minute Emergency Lighting Test

The annual 90-minute emergency lighting test is a crucial part of the safety of your building. It is
one of the most basic parts of staying up to code on safety, and should not be considered a major inconvenience, but rather a lifesaving, quick, yearly test.

Increased Safety

Having your emergency lighting and exit signs checked yearly increases safety in your building.
By making sure that your emergency lights can stay on for at least 90 minutes, you are ensuring everyone in your building will be able to see to safely exit the building during a power outage. Having properly functioning emergency lights also helps first responders rescue those who may be trapped. Make sure your lights are functioning for as long as they should be with this annual test.

Required by Law

In addition to being beneficial for your building safety, an annual 90-minute emergency lighting test is also required by the NFPA to ensure your emergency lighting is up to code.  It is part of all commercial building safety codes to have emergency lighting and have them tested annually. Most states require the full 90-minute test.

Who Can Perform a 90-Minute Emergency Lighting Test? two-headed emergency light

You must have a qualified party perform your annual 90-minute emergency lighting test. They will need to monitor your emergency lighting and exit signs during the entire session. You should plan for the best time to have it done, rather than scrambling to complete it at the last minute. Some states and insurance providers will require written records documenting the test. A qualified expert will make sure you have all the proper forms and documentation of the test to help you avoid missing a step.
