Why You Should Have an Emergency Light Inspection

Summer time presents optimal conditions where your emergency exit lights will be needed for safe and effective egress from the building. Spectacular lightning storms cause power outages and destructive fires; over-worked electrical power grids can cause brown-outs (a drop in utility voltage levels) leaving the process of exiting a building dangerous. To insure your system is fire-code compliant, it is recommended to have emergency lighting systems inspected twice per year.exit-light-inspection.png

An emergency lighting system consists of battery-operated exit signs and emergency lights that are designed to illuminate for up to 90 minutes during power failure. A 'push to test' button is available to momentarily interrupt AC power for a 30 second diagnostic test of these systems, yet these tests do not demonstrate whether the battery can sustain a 90 minute interruption.

Many exit and emergency lighting systems are old and in need of repair or upgrade to energy efficient and cost-effective exit signs and lights. A visual inspection for exposed or frayed wiring, units that are loosely mounted, or cracks and blemishes on the unit housing which could expose the electronics to moisture, are all indications that a system may be past its life cycle.

Consider an emergency exit and lighting system inspection to ensure battery packs are fully charged and terminals are free of corrosion. Electrolyte levels in many back-up batteries require periodic refilling and chargers need re-calibrating to prolong the batteries life. An inspection will ensure your system is fire code compliant and provide peace of mind in cases of unforeseen power outages or fires.
